Improvements in risk analysis have led to the development of more bespoke, or custom-made, reinsurance programs for large insurers that include a wider choice of traditional and nontraditional reinsurance.

While capital market-backed reinsurance amounts to a relatively small proportion of the market, it has an important role to play, experts say.

Improvements in risk assessment and management are changing the types of reinsurance that insurers are purchasing, said Raj Ahuja, partner in London at actuary EMB Consulting Consultancy L.L.P.
