After Sen. Edward Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor last year, his surgeons first operated and then sent him off for proton-beam treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. He could have gotten this cutting-edge care at any one of seven facilities, including locations in Oklahoma City, Houston and Jacksonville, Fla.but not in New York.
Nearly two decades after California's Loma Linda University Medical Center flipped the switch on the first hospital-based proton-beam machine in the U.S., New York hospitals are still trying to figure out whether they should follow suit, either individually or as part of a group.
