The `superbug' has arrived with Salmonella typhimurium DT (definitive type) 104 which is multiply-resistant to five antibiotics used in human therapy, being widely distributed in animal populations throughout the United States," reports Michael Doyle, head of the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety and Quality Enhancement. S. typhimurium has become resistant to five important antibiotic groups: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracycline. Also, some strains of the pathogen are acquiring resistance to fluoroquinolones, which represents the last line of defense for treating serious salmonellae infections.
