The gravity of the incident, which was fleetingly reported in the South African press before the weekend but carried gleefully and widely by the Afro-sceptic UK and US media last week, to the acute personal embarrassment of the President of the Congo, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, should not be underestimated in the context of South Africa's foreign relations.
It was aggravated by banner headlines on Sunday with Sassou-Nguesso being lampooned by Zapiro - a greater insult one could hardly imagine.
