It's not just tofu anymore.
Newspapers, magazines, talk shows, and advertisements are claiming that soy foods--or the isoflavones that most soy foods contain--can lower the risk of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and hot flashes. People are snapping up isoflavone bars, powders, and pills like there's no tomorrow.
How good is the evidence? It's clear that soy can lower blood cholesterol. Beyond that, nothing is clear.
"There are a lot of reasons to eat soy and the evidence is encouraging, but it's still preliminary," says soy expert Mark Messina of Loma Linda University in California.
