UBS got plenty of attention last week when it announced it had hired Bank of America's Robert McCann to lead its U.S. wealth management operation. But from a strategic perspective, the more interesting story may have been its capture of William Ortner from Structured Investment Management.

The appointment of Ortner - who will become a managing director in UBS' equity capital markets group and co-head of its structured equity capital markets team for the Americas - came after a recent series of other hirings.
