Illinois' legislature dealt a serious setback to one of the nation's most promising pre-k programs by making the second largest cut to state pre-kindergarten funding for the current fiscal year, according to a state-by-state analysis by Pre-K Now, a campaign of the Pew Center on the States.
The $33.8 million cut to the program stands in stark contrast to the majority of the country's lawmakers who chose to increase or protect funding for pre-kindergarten and could strip services from the families as many as 10,000 Illinois children between three and five years of age.
