Sooner or later, every mom gets faked out by her kid having an ailment that at first seems to say, "Paramedics, here we come," but soon turns out to be totally, thankfully, innocuous. In my case, it was the night my then 10-month-old son, Alex, awoke at 2 A.M. with one of those stunning can-a-kid-really-get-that-hot? fevers. It was 104 degrees, to be exact, and triggered frantic calls to our pediatrician, only to disappear as swiftly as it came, leaving my son unscathed but me a bit more sleep-deprived and seasoned a mother than I'd been the day before.
