NOT long ago, the Alentejo was considered a near-parched wilderness -- good for cork, wine, wheat and little else.

But slowly, the word has filtered out, particularly to British buyers, that this vast region of southern Portugal offers plenty more: culture, history, striking scenery, great food and -- not least -- year-round sunshine.
