Central Mississippi towns are modeling recycling efforts for the state. Madison has one of the highest rates of participation, at an estimated 45 percent, while Jackson leads the way with the most comprehensive plan.
The City of Madison has approximately 9,000 households participating in its recycling program, said Denson Robinson, director of public works. He estimates the city has an overall 45 percent participation rate citywide, which is "one of the higher ones in the area." The city has been recycling for 12 to 15 years, he said.
