Woodstock's Barrett Xplore Inc. has signed a deal worth more than US$100 million to acquire capacity on a next-generation satellite scheduled for launch in 2012.

Hughes Network Systems LLC, based in Germantown, Md., designed the Jupiter satellite with over 100 gigabits per second of capacity and has set aside 10 gigabits per second of that for Barrett Xplore, allowing the firm to reach more customers with faster service.

"For all of Canada, today, we have about one tenth of that amount," said Allison Lenehan, chief strategy officer for Barrett Xplore, in an interview Wednesday.
