It's been a quiet year since Detroit's longtime hometown air carrier, Northwest Airlines, was officially bought by Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines. The calm has surprised many industry experts and fliers who expected the transition from Northwest to Delta to be rife with errors -- especially given the many snag-ridden airline mergers of the past.

"They're doing a lot of things right," said aviation expert Terry Trippler of Minneapolis. "With a merger of this size, there's an expectation of surprises, that things are going to go wrong. But for the most part, they're getting it right."
