TROY -- Economic development officials launched a major work force development initiative Thursday night to ensure that GlobalFoundries and other high-tech companies in the Capital Region will have enough trained workers in the future.

F. Michael Tucker, president of the Center for Economic Growth, announced the project at the nonprofit's annual meeting, held on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.

Tucker said the new initiative was the idea of GlobalFoundries, which is expected to employ 1,465 people at the $4.2 billion computer chip factory it is building at Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County.
