THIS month marks the 110th anniversary of the beginning of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902. The first battle of the war was fought on October 20, 1899, at Talana on the outskirts of Dundee.
The conflict was destined to last two-and-a-half years and was one of Britain's longest, bloodiest, costliest and most humiliating wars.
After taking permanent possession of the Cape of Good Hope in '6, Britain embarked on several reforms that included the abolition of slavery, resulting in an exodus of about 5 000 Dutch speakers, in what is known as the Great Trek.
