The New Mexico Legislature is now debating cuts in the education budget. Some of the legislators feel these cuts are warranted because of a $600-700 million budget shortfall.
The education budget in New Mexico is approximately 41 percent of the state budget and therefore an obvious yet unfortunate target for budget cuts. Taos County would be severely affected by these cuts because public education is the largest employer and source of income in our county.
Consider how much money public education brings into Penasco, Questa, and Taos school districts as well as the charter schools, and UNM. This money has, of course, a ...
