For goldsmith Emily Ruffin, art is a tempering of science, math and beauty.
She knows all the numbers and the science. The atomic number of gold is 79; 18K yellow gold has a melting point of 1675 degrees Farenheit. One ounce of pure gold can be beaten out to a 300-foot--square sheet. It's no wonder a material like gold holds a special place in our imagination, with all its seemingly magical qualities.
