PARTS OF local society and the media view asylum seekers as abusers of the refugee and public allowance system. They judge them as unwilling to work and believe they receive a monthly allowance while sitting comfortably in their homes.

Announcements of high public expenditure in allowances to asylum seekers tend to enhance this stereotype. What is unfortunately forgotten is the image of destitute refugees who have lost everything in their homeland and whose primary aim in the country they have resorted to for protection is to survive.
