Work has begun on the second phase of a program to clean up Panama City and Panama bay, the presidential office reported on its website.

Phase II includes the construction of an 8km sewage pipeline for the eastern and western sectors of Panama City, the installation of sanitary sewerage networks and a pumping system.

Some 47km of collector pipelines will be built to clean up the city's contaminated rivers, the report said.

A biological wastewater treatment plant will also be built in Llano Bonito, in the district of Juan Diaz. The plant will have a capacity to treat 2.2m3/s.
