THE production of Brer Rabbit, now showing at the Market Theatre, draws its inspiration from 19th century journalist Joel Chandler Harris's assortment of folk tales, collected and transcribed from people living in the American south. Harris transposed these stories into the mouth of an elderly narrator, Uncle Remus, spawning four books.
A great deal of controversy followed the publication of these stories, considering that the folk tales should not have been attributed to Harris. In fact, historians, folklorists and linguists believe these stories tap into the long tradition of storytelling in Africa that came to America with the slaves.
