True, I was never likely to be called up, us pale females being exempt from defence of volk en vaderland and combating the rooi, the swart and all the other gevaars. But I well remember a schoolfriend, Lydia Solomon, receiving call-up papers at the end of her matric year, 1987, and getting all pink and blushful at the thought of tootling off to the Drill Hall in central Joburg to "mingle" with pimply young male conscripts.
