Johnny Depp just doesn't quite look at home with a submachine gun under his arm. He does dashing and flamboyant superbly. But menace? Alas, he fails to convince in Public Enemies, the story of John Dillinger, the Depression-era bank robber whom J. Edgar Hoover branded Public Enemy No.1. Depp may not quite cut it as a Chicago gangster but the main problem is with director Michael Mann.

The storytelling is muddled, secondary roles are ill-drawn and the acting style is oddly muted. The result may be arty but compelling it ain't. Did I care who lived and who died? No, I hadn't even worked out who ...
