Cephalon Inc.'s potential buyout of BioAssets Development Corp. for $30 million up front, plus an undisclosed payment later if the option is exercised, would fuel development of a Phase II TNF blocker for sciatica pain.
The proof-of-concept test case is a candidate with a familiar name: etanercept, the subcutaneously injected blockbuster sold as Enbrel by Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based Amgen Inc. for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, among other indications.
