o Cardiome Pharma Corp., of Vancouver, British Columbia, and co-development partner Astellas Pharma US Inc., of Deerfield, Ill., started patient enrollment in the ACT 5 trial, a confirmatory Phase III study of Kynapid (vernakalant hydrochloride) injection, in development for the rapid conversion of atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm. About 450 patients will be recruited, excluding those with evidence or history of congestive heart failure. The study, which the FDA requested following its August 2008 approvable letter, is expected to be completed the first half of 2011. (See BioWorld Today, Aug. 12, 2008.)
