Conservationists are worried that an internationally renowned artificial breeding island for lesser flamingos could be submerged because of rising levels of sewage and heavy rains.

Award-winning ornithologist Mark Anderson, the executive director of Birdlife SA, created the artificial breeding island at Kamfers Dam near Kimberley for as many as 85 000 lesser flamingos.

"At the moment, Kamfers Dam water levels are at the highest level ithey've ever been," he said.

"If it rains now and the temperatures stay cool, I reckon we're going to lose the island within a couple of weeks."
