CHAGAI HILLS, Pakistan--On the morning of May 28, the earth shook violently in this thinly populated region near the Afghanistan border. A gigantic boom shattered the hot air. Nearby villagers thought it was an earthquake and ran for their lives.

But the boom wasn't an earthquake. The villagers soon learned that their country, Pakistan, had tested nuclear weapons in the desert near their homes. Pakistan conducted the tests to answer nuclear tests carried out by India on May 11 and 13. Most Pakistanis cheered and agreed with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who said, "We have settled the score with India."
