The manager of Dunedin Smaller Companies played safe rather than pouncing on "fallen angels" back in March - and a focus on quality saw the fund recover from its tumble by September.

Ed Beal, the manager of Dunedin Smaller Companies investment trust at Aberdeen Management, describes 2009 as having been "a remarkable year" for his sector, UK smaller companies.

"In March, we saw a huge shift in the index, as companies fell out of the FTSE 100 into our sector. This meant every company in the top 20 was equivalent to 1% of the index or larger, compared with just nine a year earlier," he says.
