The use of EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) was officially opened to the general public by the European Commission, on 1 October. EGNOS is a satellite reinforcement system: it improves the accuracy of satellite navigation signals in Europe (today GPS, tomorrow Galileo, the European satellite radionavigation programme), by continuously providing GPS receivers with positioning corrections. European users will therefore be able to fine-tune the accuracy of their GPS devices to around two metres, compared with ten metres with non-improved' GPS systems.
