Glaxo said about 57,700 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with kidney cancer this year, and 13,000 people will die from the disease. The FDA said Votrient's side effects include diarrhea, high blood pressure, hair color changes, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain and headache. The drug can also cause severe and fatal liver toxicity.

Elsewhere, French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis SA received marketing clearance for its drug to help fight a serious complication of cancer treatment.
