o Amarillo Biosciences Inc., of Amarillo, Texas, said it submitted to the FDA a protocol for a Phase II study to test low-dose interferon alpha lozenges in HIV-positive patients with oral warts. About 75 patients are expected to be enrolled for a 24-week treatment period. If study results demonstrate efficacy and safety, ABI intends to conduct a Phase III trial before filing a new drug application. The FDA has granted orphan drug status to ABI for natural human lymphoblastoid interferon-alpha in the treatment of papillomavirus warts in the oral cavity of HIV patients.
