o BrainCells Inc., of San Diego, in-licensed a clinical-stage compound that it plans to develop for central nervous system diseases such as mood disorders from Mitsubishi Pharma Corp., of Osaka, Japan. BrainCells expects to begin development and initiate additional Phase II trials of the compound, BCI-540, next year. Mitsubishi had decided to halt the product's development in another indication, but BrainCells identified the new uses after applying its technology in the area of neurogenesis, the process by which endogenous stem cells in the adult human brain produce new brain tissue, including neurons. Financial terms were not disclosed.
