Adherex Technologies Inc., of Ottawa, Ontario, was issued a U.S. patent that protects the structure of anticancer drugs that inhibit intracellular catenin molecules, which are critical in the cell-to-cell binding process and play an important role in the maintenance of the structural integrity of a tumor's blood vessels.
Aphios Corp., of Woburn, Mass., was granted U.S. Patent No. 6,569,640 for a method of fractionation of biologically derived materials. Aphios described the process as using supercritical and near-critical fluids called SuperFluids, which remove extracellular compounds from biologically derived materials, disrupt them and then extract them.
