o Abiogen Pharma SpA, of Pisa, Italy, made an up-front payment of [pounds sterling]2 million to license worldwide intellectual property rights to two compounds from BTG plc, of London. The compounds, the first in a new class of non-sedating, non-addictive drugs to treat anxiety and depression, include BTG 1640, which is being developed to treat clinical anxiety states such as panic disorder, and BTG 1675A, which has shown potential as an antidepressant. The former recently entered Phase I trials at Abiogen, while the latter remains in preclinical development. BTG also said it could receive development-based milestone payments and royalties.
