Atrix Laboratories Inc., of Fort Collins, Colo., said Eligard 7.5 mg (leuprolide acetate for injectable suspension), the first of its new prostate cancer products that uses the Atrigel delivery system, is now available in the United States. Atrigel combines a mixture of biodegradable polymers in a liquid carrier. When mixed with a drug and injected into the body, the liquid solidifies and forms a small implant, which releases the drug as the implant is bioabsorbed. Atrix received approval for the one-month product in January. Atrix licensed North American marketing rights to Sanofi-Synthelabo Inc., of Paris.
