They were stacked three and four deep on the sidewalk against a fence, ostracized from the bustling marketplace at Thistledown Farm on River Road, neglected, yesterday's sensation.
They were Nov. 1 pumpkins, obsolete and unwanted after Halloween. Not even for five measly cents a pound.
They were useless as Christmas trees in January, barely worth chopping into pieces small enough for cows and hogs to eat, their meat too tough and bland for pies or Thai curry, the chance that they'd be carved into frightening faces having dwindled with each day that Halloween approached, and then vanquished - "squashed," if ...
