The HidroAysen JV developing the US$3.2bn, 2.75GW hydro project in southern Chile's Aysen region is studying submarine transmission options and could submerge up to 170km of a 2,000km transmission line off Chile's southern coast, newspaper La Tercera reported.

The transmission line, which would have to cross pristine areas of Chile's Patagonia region to transport power to metropolitan Santiago, has emerged as one of the most contentious aspects of the project.

Chilean transmission company Transelec is developing the line for HidroAysen.
