Peaceful and commercially underdeveloped, Bandar Seri Begawan, the modest capital city of Brunei, belies the enormous wealth for which the tiny south-east Asian country has so long been famed. Situated atop the north-west coast of the island of Borneo, the tropical Sultanate has been blessed with deep reserves of crude oil and liquefied natural gas which have single-handedly underpinned three decades of extraordinary economic growth. But the country's oil and gas reserves are dwindling and gross domestic product (GDP) growth, projected at just 0.6% for 2010, has weakened: the country is no longer able to trade on its carbon credentials.
