About 780,000 Americans suffer a stroke each year. It's the leading cause of long-term disability and is often fatal. To shed light on how to reduce the risk, the International Stroke Conference convened scientists and doctors involved in the research and treatment of stroke in New Orleans in late February.
Here are some highlights of the research presented:
* Insulin resistance was linked to a greater risk of stroke and heart attack among 1,735 men and women with an average age of 63, according to researchers with the Northern Manhattan Study.
