Imports are throwing thousands of manufacturing employees out of work. The Department of Labor certified 10,900 workers on October 9 and October 16 to receive Trade Adjustment Assistance due to direct foreign competition that killed their jobs, says Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. The federal government will provide these workers with help to find "new opportunities in emerging sectors," she added, but did not say just what those "emerging sectors" might be, nor the "opportunities."
