PERTH, Nov 5 Asia Pulse - BHP Billiton Ltd (ASX:BHP) has temporarily suspended the construction of a new rail line in Western Australia's Pilbara region after raising safety concerns with the contractor.
The 200km rail line is being built from Port Hedland to Redmont as part of the mining giant's Rapid Growth Project 5 (RPG5) to expand iron ore output.
It is understood the contractor, the Macmahon Holdings Ltd (ASX:MAH)/Leighton Holdings Ltd (ASX:LEI) joint venture, has not been allowed to work on the project this week.
BHP Billiton spokeswoman Kelly Quirke said in an emailed statement that work was expected to resume in coming days.
