photographer Michael Lavine's new photo book, Grunge (published by Abrams Image). "On one hand, that word was ridiculous ... and on the other hand, just beautiful: a smart and amusing shrug within the American scream-dream."

Lavine found himself in the Northwest in the early and mid-'80s, a time in music history when "American gimp metal," as Moore so lovingly describes it (thinking of REO Speedwagon), was beginning to feel the pressure from less mainstream musical camps, most notably the youth-driven hardcore-punk scene.
