EXAM boards should be fined or sacked for dumbing down science GCSEs and A-levels as they 'race to the bottom' to win business from schools, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Warning that the exam system was 'not working', it demanded tougher penalties for boards that undermine standards.
Chief executive Dr Richard Pike fears they are diluting the difficulty of papers as they compete to sell their services.
He said a study this year had highlighted examples of GCSE science questions requiring neither scientific knowledge nor a grasp of maths.
