The European Commission is drawing up a regulation to harmonise criteria for the certification of fishery products, which it plans to present before the end of the year.
Pushed by distributors, among others, the principle of certification of fishery products has become a reality and the number of private labels is growing. They are based on criteria that are often similar but never identical. The EU executive could no longer afford to ignore this trend, for two reasons. First, sustainable fishing is a key aspect of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and second, the internal market makes harmonisation of such criteria a necessity.
