THE interior of southern Africa could become up to 10176C hotter as soon as 2060, drying up 70 percent of the water run-off and slashing yields from staple crops, if countries do not curtail their carbon emissions.

This is the warning from Britain's Meteorological Office, which has released new research predicting that the world will become four degrees hotter on average by the end of the century, with regional differences.

These increases could occur as early as 2060, a senior official said.

Some local climate change scientists said the higher extremities of the new predictions seemed exaggerated.
