Mohair producers across the world will have to apply new strategies to revive their mohair industries as production of this natural fibre has slumped from 25 million kilograms in 1996 to 5 million kilograms.
Producing 2.9 million kilograms a year, South Africa provides the bulk of the world's mohair (55 percent), but it too has suffered severely as a result of recession, and mohair becoming displaced in the clothing and household furnishings industries by man-made fibres such as acrylic, nylon and polyester.
