"The only time in my life I was totally in charge was when I was flying an airplane, says Richard Donahey, who ran his father's brass-forging company in Detroit until his retirement at age 78 three years ago. The passionate pilot was sitting in church one day in the 1980s when he temporarily lost sight in one eye. "I grounded myself, so I decided to stop playing with airplanes and switched to cars, he says. "Once in a while, my eye still flickers.
Until that moment, Donahey had owned four airplanes in succession during a 19-year period, from a bare-bones Cessna 150 to a Bonanza 310 that was pressurized and had radar.
