James Marino has repaired the split ends at Alberto-Culver Co., giving the Lavin family's company surprising new luster.
Since taking over three years ago as the first outsider to run the 54-year-old beauty products manufacturer, Mr. Marino has boosted profits and kept the company independent longer than many expected. Named CEO in the wake of a corporate breakup and the divorce of his predecessor and the founder's daughter, Mr. Marino was seen by many as a short-timer likely to deliver Melrose Park-based Alberto-Culver into the arms of a larger rival.
