About 100,000 electric utility customers in Minnesota and the Dakotas will be getting so-called "smart meters" as part of President Obama's plan to spend $3.4 billion on the nation's power transmission system to foster new technologies.

Obama introduced the plan Tuesday at a solar energy facility in Florida. In all, 100 projects will be funded nationwide, with utilities matching the federal grants, dollar for dollar.
