CNOOC buys stakes in Statoil's US oil assets

Shanghai. November 5. INTERFAX-CHINA - Statoil, the Norwegian oil giant, has sold partial stakes in some of its U.S. assets to China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), Statoil said on Nov. 4 in its third quarter fiscal report.

Statoil signed a agreement with CNOOC on Oct. 29 involving a number of Statoil's leases in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the report.

The deal marks the first time a Chinese company has gained access to oil assets in the United States.

Unlike CNOOC's failed attempt to takeover Unocal in 2005, U.S. politics will not obstruct the deal, given the small sums involved ...
