* Sen. Homer E. Capehart, R-Ind., has introduced a bill to extend Coast Guard inspections to vessels over 300 tons powered by internal combustion engines. Inland waterways officials say that the measure is aimed at vessels powered by diesel engines. Coast Guard inspection is currently limited to steam-driven vessels of over 300 gross register tons.
* The $10 million Essayons, which will be the world's largest seagoing hopper dredge when completed, was launched in August at Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Chester, Pa. The 525'2"x72'x40'5" dredge is being built for the Army Engineers Philadelphia Office, which designed the Essayons. The ...
