The publication of Thornbury's book is particularly welcome, for there has not been such a lengthy study in English of the Japanese folk performing arts. It covers almost every category of the folk performing arts. First, Thornbury clearly and comprehensively explicates categories of the folk performing arts. She then presents a summarized history of studies by Japanese scholars beginning from the 1920s.
